START 2024 WITH HIGH-TEMPO SPEED & AGILITY GAMES!!!!

Restarting training after a holiday layoff can sometimes be a challenge, particularly when it's in the winter months and training time is limited. Although it's natural for fitness levels to drop, training sessions can certainly incorporate the ball when coaches are looking for their team to regain match fitness. Starting a session in an uptempo manner has a number of benefits, including moving focus towards optimal levels and sparking enthusiasm into a group of players. Engagement can be achieved through a variety of ways: fun, competition, or sometimes simply challenging a specific technique can get a great response from a team. This week we will take a look at three exercises that coaches can use to start their session with. If you enjoy the sessions, you can find the details below.

1v1 Speed and Agility Game -


  • Minimum eight players required, split into two teams

  • 20x10 yard area split plus two wide 5-yard channels

  • One player from each team go at the same time

  • Stage 1: Speed work in the wide channels

  • Stage 2: 1v1 Game to goal

  • When 1v1 game starts, next two players can go

  • Play 4x3 minute games and keep score





3v3 Speed and Agility Game


  • Minimum eighteen players required, split into two teams

  • 20x20 yard area split with six speed and agility stations on the outside

  • Three players from each team go at the same time in different starting spots

  • Stage 1: Speed work on the outside

  • Stage 2: 3v3 Game to goal with goalkeepers

  • When 3v3 game finish, next set of players can go

  • Play 4x3 minute games and keep score








9v3 Speed and Agility Rondo Competition


  • Minimum eighteen players required, split into two teams

  • 15x15 yard area for possession team

  • Three speed and agility stations set up for pressing team

  • Three pressing players start at the same time

  • Ball is played to possession team

  • Pressing players perform speed work and immediately go to win ball back

  • Every ten passes counts for one goal

  • Play 4x4 minute games and switch roles after each game
